Why Mr. Spock is "Mr. Spock"

Prologue by Mr. Spock

" B c "

Chapter 1

Deciding that we wanted a puppy was difficult, but once Wifey and I decided that we wanted one the act of zeroing-in on the right breed was even more difficult. A sweet bloke who would be ideally suited for an apartment, who would not bark like crazy, would be frugal in shedding his coat, would be more of a dog than a "cat" and would be vary of strangers… that was our wish-list. Now, this took out some of the popular contenders like the GSD, the Dobermann, the Pug (falls in the "cat" variety as far as I am concerned) and the likes. We were left with just the Labrador and the Boxer to choose from. At this point, began another exercise. This one did prove to be a lot more taxing than the two earlier problems. Finding the right name for our puppy was no child’s play; it had to stand him in good stead for 10-15 years.

We did contemplate some desi names, two of them being "Shunakaraj" and "Kuresh" but then decided against it. My cousin once got a puppy, he was all of 6 or 7 years at the time, and named him "T K. Gopalakrishnan Nair" after his school Principal. We wanted to avoid any such incident. One was bad enough on the family name.

As for cartoon characters inspiring us, we did go through "Hobbes", "Dogbert" and "Bugs" but then I have enough of "Bugs" at office and as for the other names, we decided that home was already a "Cartoon Network" enough to need fresh recruits.

We mined the net for all the information we could get on both the Lab and the Boxer, as we were yet to decide on the breed. First the breed then the name was our new motto. After some brainstorming we decided to go for names that suit the breed. The Lab is a leisurely, peaceful and noble breed so we decided to call our (prospective) Lab "Macbeth". Boxers are the entertainers, unconventional looking yet very endearing. Both breeds were equally appealing from what we could read up thus making it impossible to get to a decision. So then I shot a mail to HydChat (the elixir of all info at my place of work). The feedback was heavily tipped in favour of the Lab. In fact, there was not one reply recommending the boxer. We realized that this was due to the fact that so few owned this breed of dog! The decision was made. We’d have a boxer at home and he would carry the name of one of our favourite fictional characters, in fact, one of television's 50 greatest characters ever!

Watch this space for more adventures as Mr. Spock goes where no pup has gone before!
